Join us for a Wim Hof Method retreat at Swinton Bivouac in the Yorkshire Dales. Wim Hof’s foundations are built on the ‘three pillar method’ of breathing, cold exposure and positive mindset. This 2-night retreat will help you to learn or become better practiced in the Wim Hof Method, ultimately helping to unlock a host of benefits including increased energy, better sleep, stronger immune system and reduced stress levels. A retreat at Swinton Bivouac will help you to take a step away from your day to day life, re-assess and re-balance.
Swinton Bivouac is in a beautifully remote location, set on the edge of the moorland Yorkshire Dales (five miles from the market town of Masham) with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The tree lodges enjoy woodland seclusion, just a short distance from the Tipi and Café. Guests are welcome to explore the woodland and discover the Druid’s Temple, standing stones and further breath taking views across the Swinton Estate.
Emma Estrela is a certified instructor of The Breathing Class by Dr. Belisa Vranich and the Wim Hof Method level 3, the highest possible. She is an international speaker and an ambassador for the Wim Hof Method. She has completed both a Marathon and an Ultra Marathon without any conventional training, fully incorporating the Wim Hoff Method, the valuable mechanics by The Breathing Class by Dr. Belisa Vranich and the Buteyko Method by Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko as part of her training regime.
Since then, Emma has studied with Patrick Mckeown (Oxygen Advantage) to gain a deeper understanding of the science of efficient breathing through the nose.
Emma understands the body doesn’t lie and her key has been discovering the true power of Breathwork for healing
Wim Hof is a Dutch extreme athlete noted for his ability to withstand freezing temperatures, which he attributes to the Wim Hof Method.
The Wim Hof Method is comprised of three pillars, Breathwork, Cold Exposure and Commitment. The power of the Wim Hof Method is the combination of the three pillars. A committed, consistent practice including the breathing technique and cold exposure can help you unlock a host of benefits including; increased energy, better sleep, reduced stress levels, heightened focus & determination, increased willpower and stronger immune system.
Daily there is a group cold dip in the cold tub located at the Tree Lodge.
The cold is you friend and one of the three pillars of the Wim Hof Method. Proper exposure to the cold starts a cascade of health benefits, including the buildup of brown adipose tissue and resultant fat loss, reduced inflammation that facilitates a fortified immune system, balanced hormone levels, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins— the feel-good chemicals in the brain that naturally elevate your mood.
The daily breathing session will be lead by Emma in the tipi, just a short walk from the Tree Lodges.
Breathing is the second pillar of the Wim Hof Method, we’re always breathing, yet we’re mostly unaware of its tremendous potential. Heightened oxygen levels hold a treasure trove of benefits, and the specialized breathing technique of the Wim Hof Method unearths them all: more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response that swiftly deals with pathogens.
Whilst some of the activities are undercover, there will be walking to and from the Tree Lodges to the Tipi and Café (about a 5 minute walk) whatever the weather, so warm and waterproof clothing and footwear is essential, whilst remaining comfortable for full benefit of the breathing session. Torches are provided for guiding the way first thing in the morning and in the evening!
Don't forget your bathing suit for the cold dip and time in the sauna, if desired.
There will be time around the firepit after dinner, even though the fire will help keep you warm please remember an additional layer of warmth to keep you cosy.
The package cost is £492.50 per person, based on two people sharing a Tree Lodge. The Tree Lodges are shared accommodation (we will endeavor to arrange for accommodation to be single sex where individual bookers are sharing) and, if available, single occupancy is available at a supplement.
A vegetarian breakfast basket will be served to the lodge each morning (where you can prepare it at your own leisure). Dinner is vegetarian, wholesome and nutritious, served with water and a herbal tea for after the meal. We encourage guests to avoid caffeine and alcohol as much as possible.
The charge includes breakfast and dinner, and all breathing sessions, cold dips and sauna sessions (in the Woodland Sauna). Any additional activities, meals or refreshments will be charged for. You will need to make your own travel arrangements, the nearest stations are Northallerton and Thirsk. If leaving the Swinton Bivouac site throughout the retreat, you will require your own transport, a shuttle service is not available.

You will be staying in complete solitude in one of our tree lodges, which enjoy a woodland setting with views across the Dales. The lodges are hand built and off-grid. This means that there is no electricity and no wifi. Your source of heat is your wood burner, but there is gas for hot water in your shower room and kitchen. At night your only source of light is a wind up lantern and candlelight. Please note the paths to and from the lodges can be uneven, so we recommend you carry a torch with you in the evenings. The car park is a short walk away from the lodges, so soft luggage that is easy to carry (not on wheels) is recommended. The walk to the Long Barn and Café through the meadow takes 5-10 minutes.
The layout of the tree lodge is open plan with double beds on a bunk arrangement. There is an indoor and outdoor seating area, shower & WC, and well equipped kitchen. Each Tree Lodge has an alfresco cold dip tub and hammock resting between the trees. Nestled among the Tree Lodges is a communal Wood Fired Sauna for guests to use throughout their stay.
