The working community on the Estate is a mix of rural, leisure and agricultural enterprises. There are over 180 people employed by the Estate and these range from chefs and spa therapists to foresters and gamekeepers. There are also several other businesses on the Estate that include Masham Snooker Club, Johnny Baghdads Café, The Gallery, Farm Adventure, EJ Churchill Shooting Ground, Swinton Trout Farm and Masham Trekking Centre. The Estate is about an hour from York and Leeds and some that live on the Estate commute daily, although the majority live and work locally.
The Swinton Estate has supported the local community over the years in numerous ways. As well as gifting land and buildings, such as the Almshouses, Masham School, Healey Church, Fearby Village Hall and Masham Town Hall, it also leases the Market Place and playing fields at the Recreation Ground and Shooting Holme to Masham Parish Council on a rent free basis. The family currently or have previously been actively involved in supporting Masham Sheep Fair, Masham Steam Rally, Masham Community Office, Masham Almshouses, Masham Roadside Campaign, Burn Valley Run, Masham School and Acorns Pre-School. Support also extends to organisations further afield that include Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and the Ocean Youth Trust North.
There is also the charitable Swinton Foundation, set up by the Estate to provide a permanent structure of support for initiatives that help regenerate the rural landscape and provide a catalyst for enterprise and development within the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding area. Please see Swinton Foundation for further information.
