Swinton Foundation

The Swinton Foundation is a charitable trust that supports charities, artists, entrepreneurs and communities in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding area, helping regenerate the rural landscape and with the Swinton Estate providing a base as a catalyst for further enterprise and development.

Each year the Foundation selects several local and one Yorkshire charity to support exclusively. In 2019 these are Acorns Pre-School, Masham School, Grewelthorpe School, Kell Bank School and Masham Sports Association (at a local level) and the Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust. Support takes the form of providing the use of the Estate’s resources for fundraising, team building and educational events such as holding cookery lessons for the children, providing tours of the garden and trips into the Deerpark to see the fawns and hosting a Candlelit Carol Concert. We also provide vouchers for Swinton experiences for fundraising.

In addition to supporting our nominated charities, we also support individual applicants with sponsorship and financial grants for particular causes that meet our criteria. Each year approximately £8000 is awarded and recent beneficiaries include Masham Church and Aiskew RC Church , Mashamshire Community Office, Disability Sports and Action Yorkshire, Local hospices and Ocean Youth Trust North amongst others

We have hosted several art exhibitions over the years, supporting local artists and notably New Light (a charity formed in 2010 to promote and support emerging young contemporary artists in the North of England) with a fundraising exhibition and the sponsorship of the Swinton Foundation prize.

Over the last ten years we have supported the Help For Heroes recovery centre, Phoenix House, at Catterick. Every two years we organise with H4H for six veterans to spend a day at six Yorkshire restaurants. During their day in the kitchens they learn a Yorkshire game dish, which they then cook under competition conditions at the Swinton Cookery School. The winner then spends a week on the Swinton Estate, gaining experience in the Samuel’s, Terrace and Bivouac kitchens and also learning further skills in the Cookery School. For all veterans involved this is an opportunity to try mastering new skills, consider a new career path and challenge themselves.

If you are interested in being one of our nominated charities or applying for an individual award or other level of support, please do not hesitate to contact us. Nominated charity applications need to be submitted by 1st January (the annual year starts 1st April). Applications for a financial award or sponsorship needs to be submitted by 1st February. If you are seeking any other kind of support, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time by emailing the Swinton Foundation administrator.
