The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust was set up to improve the water quality and biodiversity of the rivers in the Yorkshire Dales, working with the river bank landowners to limit erosion and pollution run-off. In more recent years it has become involved in natural flood management and engagement with local schools.
Mark Cunliffe-Lister has been President of the Trust for over 10 years and been involved in a number of projects. In particular, the Estate collapsed a disused weir across the River Burn in 2016, opening up access to the upper stretch of the water to migratory fish such as salmon (for the first time in over 100 years). There has been a very encouraging overall increase in Salmon numbers and improvement in river health in the Ure, while many river systems elsewhere in the country are seeing a marked decrease.
